| Bibb County Alabama is centrally located in
the state so we are within easy access to all the best this
state has to offer. We are nestled in the foothills of the
end of the mighty Appalachian Trail so we have mountains
here and oceans near too in the beautiful Gulf of
Mexico.
In addition to that we have several sites of interest
right here at home. Bibb County is rich in history. From one
spot to the next you can pay homage to our heritage. Our
ancestors are honored by tributes in display of their toil.
You don't have to go far to find peace or entertainment.
We will begin this index by listing those local
attributes. Then we venture out a bit beyond our borders to
those attractions nearby.
Of course nearly community in the county has ballparks
or sports arenas, public parks or playgrounds and civic
clubs. Each area also has it own claim to fame.
Located at the far North end of Bibb County is part of
historical Tannehill State Park. They have many varied
features from times gone by dated back to the 18th century.
Among them is an old griss mill and furnace that can't be
missed but as well they have attractions for the young and
young at heart. Take a ride on the mini railroad and breeze
through the park to enjoy the scenic view.
In the quaint town of West Blocton, a mining town by
history, we have what is known as the "Coke Oven"
park. A stroll through the serene area yields much knowledge
and a sense of days gone by.
West Blocton is a gateway to another attraction that draws people from far and wide. Just east of town is a prime spot where nature lovers gather to view a wonder God gave us. The famous Cahaba River
Lilies are a natural attraction that draws many. We are the
honored home to the largest natural stand of the famous
beauties anywhere in the world.
DIRECTIONS TO SEE THE CAHABA LILIES
Take I-59 south from Birmingham for about 30 miles to the Highway 5 West Blocton/Centreville exit.
Hwy 5/Hwy 11 is 4-lane for about 3 miles where Hwy 5 turns abruptly south as a 2-lane. Watch for this turn!
Travel 10 miles south on Hwy 5 to a Blinking yellow light. Turn left (onto county road 24) to West Blocton.
Continue straight at the stop sign (passing West Blocton High School and West Blocton Elementary on the right) for 5 miles to the Cahaba River.
A couple of hundred yards before you can actually see the bridge, turn south (right) on a rough dirt road which runs along the west side of the river. Use your
judgment about whether your vehicle can negotiate the road.
There is a good stand of lilies just under 1 mile down the road, and the largest stand in the world just over 2 miles down the road.
Please do not pick the lilies or remove the bulbs for transplantation. The plant might survive 1-2 years out of its proper habitat, but the prospect for long-term survival is slim. Besides, the most beautiful place to see the Cahaba Lily is in its natural
habitat. CRS Home
According to locals of the county another uncommon
attraction in West Blocton seems to be the old Catholic
graveyard. Now ordinarily I would never advise anyone to
visit such a place but this particular cemetery seems to
hold a real fascination for folks around here. Aged
headstones marking graves there date far back into the 17
and 1800's. Why there's even a grave with an antique
portrait embellishing the headstone that people claim to be
Dracula. Not the actual vampire of course but they say he
does bear a remarkable resemblance to the neck bandit so
therefore this grave tends to be a bit more eerie than most.
Of course I would never believe such a tale...but...if you
go there...be sure to wear a turtleneck. Never hurts to be
cautious. :-)
Before we go further into trick or treat tantrums,
let's remember the course.
In the bustling little city of Centreville, our county
seat, there's a riverside park that again, brings to mind
days long past. It's a beautiful public park fully equipped
to handle gatherings of near any size. There are things
there to see, do and enjoy for varied ages from a playground
to relics of days of yore. And of course, there is a boat
ramp that launches right into the powerful Cahaba river. The
view and serenity is magnificent there and a day would be
well spent enjoying it.
In nearby Briarfield there's the marvelous Ironworks
park. It too serves a multiple and musical purpose that
folks from all around enjoy.
How could we possibly forget to cite that a mere 30
miles or so away is the metropolitan city of Tuscaloosa who
is of course host city for the University
of Alabama and the mighty Crimson
Tide! Alabama Roll Tide that is, one of the
greatest football teams in history. For all Auburn
Tiger fans out there, War
Eagle too! (mandatory mention in this dedicated
state.) Anyone who's ever heard of SEC understands that
rivalry. Why virtually the entire nation notices when that
famous game is played however nearly everything in
Alabama comes a grinding halt that day. There are most
assuredly definitive divisions here in the state over those
teams. BUT we at BCB want to be fair and claim both as well
we should. After all they are two of the most dominant teams
ever to enter a field. And we're proud to have them both.

our freebies page!)
Also outside our county we have nearby access to theme parks
such as Visionland,
approximately 22 miles away. It's located in the historic
city of Bessemer Alabama.
There is so much more to see and do in or near Bibb
County.
